WITHIN THE LABYRINTH: Exploring COEX Systems

Hidden Patterns That Shape Your Path

While conducting LSD-assisted psychotherapy, Stanislav Grof quickly noticed that the experiences of his patients spontaneously organized themselves into recurring themes closely related to their individual issues. These themes included similar biographical experiences from different periods of life, as well as specific transpersonal motifs touching the same core meaning.

Sometimes these experiences revolved around abandonment, a sense of injustice, emotional deprivation, or feelings of personal inadequacy. Grof called these constellations COEX systems (from Condensation of Experience), and built many of his guidelines for working in expanded states of consciousness on this concept. The same phenomenon is also clearly observable in the practice of Holotropic Breathwork.

Systems of Condensed Experience (COEX) are dynamic constellations of memories, emotions, and bodily sensations organized around a shared theme. They shape the way we feel, remember, and relate to others.

These hidden patterns connect personal history, birth-related experiences, and even transpersonal dimensions. Exploring them within the labyrinth of the psyche opens powerful pathways for self-knowledge, healing, and transformation.

This module offers a fascinating and largely experiential exploration of our own COEX systems. Through presentations, exercises, and practical examples, participants will enter a process of recognizing and integrating their personal COEX patterns—inviting their acknowledgment, release, and the softening of rigid emotional structures.

Together we will explore:

  • the structure and dynamics of COEX systems within Grof’s cartography of the psyche — including biographical, perinatal, and transpersonal components;

  • emotionally “charged clusters of experience” in other psychological frameworks — such as schemas or complexes;

  • the dynamic nature of COEX — how these systems shape our perception of reality, emotional responses, and relationships with others, and how reality itself may reinforce a particular COEX pattern;

  • why certain experiences become part of a COEX system;

  • the most commonly occurring COEX systems;

  • recognizing an emerging COEX within oneself and in others;

  • discovering one’s own COEX systems;

  • the role of positive COEX systems in our lives and how they can be included in the healing process;

  • the difference between transmodulation of a COEX system and its full integration;

  • practical tools for working with and healing COEX systems — in expanded states of consciousness, in traditional therapy, and in everyday life;

  • the role of the holotropic setting in the healing of specific COEX patterns;

  • integrating COEX material — translating insight into embodied transformation and everyday life.

Alongside conceptual and experiential exploration of COEX systems, participants will take part in four Holotropic Breathwork sessions:

  • two in the role of breather,

  • two in the role of sitter (supporting participant),

complemented by creative integration practices and dedicated integration time.

Participants will gain both personal insight and professional understanding of how these patterns manifest in our lives—and how to support others in recognizing and transforming them, opening pathways toward deep healing, restored flow, and personal growth.
